And as a consistent theme in the manga, if Griffith is vulnerable he will act rashly. The true extent to which his dream was “soaked in blood” had once again shaken him, rendering him vulnerable. It was another moment of vulnerability for Griffith, the same moral dilemma creeping into his mind as the day he found the child soldier’s corpse. Mere days earlier he had even asked Guts if he thought he was a dreadful person. From plotting assassinations, to blackmailing politicians by kidnapping their children, to showing little remorse when a child is caught in the crossfire of his assassination plot, Griffith grew more coldblooded with each passing volume. It is the kind of cold, remorseless logic Griffith had become more accustomed to. If Guts was going to leave then he was not worth sparring in the first place. In fact, a slightest miscalculation would prove fatal. As he plans his attack he realizes it will severely wound Guts. It doesn’t help that by now his ego has grown cumbersomely large making his conscience dwindle that much more. Above all, sociopaths are ruthlessly selfish with an inability to handle not having what they want, arguably Griffith’s most defining trait. a friend, in the Falcons despite all their sacrifices for his dream), has little to no relatives (he has failed to mention a single relative through 38 volumes so far), is prone to playing the victim (he utterly ruins Guts’ life because he left the Falcons to live independently, something Griffith considered a betrayal), and is highly needy (his dynamic with Guts is arguably rooted in this). We don’t get a real look at what dream Judeau might have wanted (besides his affection for Casca, and maybe that’s all he meant!) I don’t think confessing those feelings would have to be forcing them-but he sensed it was unrequited, and he was so objective in all things that he took stock of himself and said, “Nah-neither I nor Griffith is what Casca really wants or needs to be happy. The telltale signs of a sociopath is that he or she is charming and charismatic (easily one of his most disarming quality), extremely manipulative by tapping into a person’s pity, respect or even fear to his or her own advantage (everything about his persona is built around getting people to do what he wants), is highly insightful about what makes people tick (he rattles on about why Guts fights despite having never spoken to him before and effortlessly deduced that the King was in love with his own daughter), has trouble feeling remorse or empathy (one of his main character arcs is his growing lack of regard for morality culminating with his transformation into the demonic Femto), is delusional especially in his or her self-perception (Guts markedly calls his dream of becoming a king a delusion), is rarely anxious in tense situations (while his stolid demeanor is a sign of his great leadership ability it may be a symptom of his sociopathic tendencies), is highly intelligent (his war strategies and political machinations), can be violent and sadistic (his actions during the Eclipse and the fact that his dream is quite literally soaked in the blood of friends and foes alike), is surrounded by followers instead of friends and often has virtually no friends (Griffith didn’t consider anyone an equal i.e. He also doesn’t push Guts here-only nudges-but he’s right about them and he’s also right about Guts having actually found a place he could have belonged. He goes into all the reasons that Griffith and Casca won’t work-including that what Casca feels for Griffith is beyond romantic love-it’s worship. And it’s interesting-I’ve never thought of it this way-but right after this conversation… he proceeds to stand behind Guts rather than Griffith as the best person for Casca. He casts himself as a side character, but he also became an actor anyway, who nudged the story-like when he nudged Guts toward Casca (twice) and when he and Pippin saved Casca at the eclipse, because they knew the Band of the Hawk would live on only through her (and that, imo, is still true! It’s Casca that brings the BotH’s last remaining members together at The Hill of Swords, and she’s the one who prompts Guts to begin accepting new companions). He became this person who watched on and studied others and supported them, offering his support in terms of combat skills as well as emotional and social intelligence. Judeau said to himself, I can’t be best at anything, so I’ll stand behind who I think is the best.
